GROCERY STORE PROJECT

This project was a multiple week long project that focused on collaboration with other 3d artists. The goal of this project was to create a 30 second commercial to kick off the grand opening for a grocery store named "AJ's". The commercial needs to show characters joyfully picking out products and expressing happiness when they see the low prices. The commercial also needs to to have a free curbside pickup program and a rewards program.

MODELLING

I modelled two assets throughout this project and they were the cash register table and the can of soup. I was working in a group with James and Stefan. James was able to model the shelves, shopping cart, interior & exterior of the store, and the television. Stefan found a model of a car from Turbosquid. I feel like I really rushed through this model and it isn't as good as I may have wanted it to be. Some of the topology is a little funky but it worked and the textures were able to sit nicely onto the table.

TELEVISION MOTION GRAPHIC

This was a really interesting and fun shot that James and I were able to work on. The television is a 3d model that James was able to create. I created the motion graphic of the AJ's logo along with the effects from after effects to make the television seems older. There are glitch effects and things that help the television look more realistic. I created the motion graphic by just using a simple mask over the television screen and overlaying the effects and motion graphics.

SHOT 025 ANIMATION

This shot is a super simple reaction shot. The point of the animation was to show the reaction of the character when they encountered the storefront. I think I did a good job with the animation as the entire body moves with the reaction with the face. I think I could have added more complex animation with the clavicles and maybe even the ears or creating interesting mouth shapes.

SHOT 035 ANIMATION

This was a super simple shot. The animation was very minimal and I didn't spend very much time refining this shot as it was so simple and didn't reflect on the story too much. If I wanted to make this animation better, I would have added movement to the fingers as she is readjusting her grip to the can but overall I think this shot was very effective in our commercial.

SHOT 040 ANIMATION

The animation in this shot was a lot more important than some of the other shots as we see the character's face and their reactions to the environment. Overall, I liked the way this shot turned out. I definitely could have refined some of the animation such as adding overlapping animation to the arms and moving the fingers while also creating better face shapes as the mouth looked a little bit awkward.

SHOT 070 ANIMATION

This was the very last shot of the commercial so I needed to make sure that the animation is believable. I really focused on the weight distribution and how the character was walking. It was important to have the hips moving side to side along with the torso moving up and down as a normal walk cycle would have. It was easy to animate the arms as they were just parented to the shopping cart so the IK handles covered the animation.

FINAL COMMERCIAL

This is the end product of our commercial. I had a ton of learning opportunities while working on this project. I had a lot of work throughout this project as I helped create the file organization structures along with some of the modelling, lighting, and almost all of the animation. I was working on the animation for every single shot except for the second shot (010). I also helped with some of the lighting on shots. James worked on all of the textures throughout the short and he also worked on some of the lighting for more important shots. At the very end, I helped composite the final product (including the motion graphic and logo). I am very glad that we were given the chance to work on this project and I am looking forward to our senior thesis project.
